Lou Holtz
I like much about Lou Holtz. Really, I do. I liked him when he was the coach at Arkansas. I like his upbeat speaking. He even gave me a small reason not to dislike Notre Dame as much.
With much to like, it is time to pronounce Holtz as senile. At least when it comes to Notre Dame football.
I began to suspect as much when I would watch Mark May (his fellow ESPN analyst) squirm in his seat over some of Holtz’s prognostications. It became confirmed a few days ago when he predicted that Notre Dame would play Florida in the National Championship game. Really? Are you kidding me?
It appears more than a hint that Holtz has succumbed to homerism at its finest. The former Notre Dame coach has revealed that the word “bias” is not even adequate to define this pick.
The Los Angeles Times has a great headline on their article about this, “Lou Holtz’s Crystal Ball Appears to be Cracked.”
For those of you inclined to give credence to his prediction, the LA Times article tracks 3 of his previous predictions regarding Notre Dame.
- Notre Dame would handily beat LSU in the 2007 Sugar Bowl. They lost 41-14.
- They would be a Top 10 team in 2007. They finished 3-9.
- They would win 11 games in 2008. They finished 6-6.
Perhaps it is time for ESPN to ban Holtz from making Notre Dame predictions. At least they could run a disclaimer that they are supporting senility studies.

I like Lou Holtz, too, but it’s not his crystal ball that’s cracked. It’s his head.
