How The Righteous Flourish « The Essential Owen

John Owen (1613 - 1686)

If you notice up in the heading to this blog, the subtitle is Flourish Like the Palm Tree.  That phrase is taken from this passage in Psalm 92:

The righteous flourish like the palm tree
and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
They are planted in the house of the LORD;
they flourish in the courts of our God.
They still bear fruit in old age;
they are ever full of sap and green,
to declare that the LORD is upright;
he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
(Psalm 92:12-15 ESV)

When I saw that The Essential Owen blog posted about John Owen’s comments on this passage, my ears perked up.  Owen was a 17th century English Puritan.  His extensive theological writings continue to bless those who read them.  Here is what Owen had to say about this section on Psalm 92:

Here are some articles on art, reading your Bible and an Irish blessing.

3 Reasons We Have an Art Gallery (and 3 Un-reasons)

People often ask me, “Why does Sojourn own an art gallery?” So as we relive this past Friday through photos, let’s also look at three reasons we run The 930. Then we’ll look at three things that people may assume are reasons, none of which fit with our vision.

I love this art gallery and the commitment this church has to the arts.

Speaking of art, check out what my talented daughter-in-law did.  She’s pretty crafty.

Louisville: GQ’s Manliest Town in America

Louisville is my favorite city in America.  GQ magazine thinks it is pretty special, too.  The travel writer for GQ spent some time in the city and discovered some of what makes this city unique.  They came to this conclusion without even mentioning that my three grandchildren live there.

My wife, Suzie moved from Florida to Louisville long enough to snag a manly husband :) .

Here are some of the things that make this city a great place to live and visit.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.”
(Isaiah 1:18 ESV)

Today I began my journey through the prophets in my personal bible meditations.  Isaiah is the first of the prophetic books in the Old Testament.

As I began to read, I was greatly discouraged to read of a nation who was living under the judgment of God.  Things were a sinful mess.  So much so that God basically told them to stop having special religious days of sacrifice.  He was fed up with their religiosity including their prayers.

How Was Your Ash Wednesday?

ash wednesday

Coming from a baptist background, I usually have not given much thought to Ash Wednesday or Lent.  I first began thinking about it about 10 years ago when I was a member of Sojourn Community Church in Louisville.  Although Sojourn is a baptist church, these days were always a big deal.  I admit to being late to the conversation, but I like it.

It is not something that has to be on your calendar, but I am learning to add it to mine.  Today begins 40 days leading up to Easter or Resurrection Sunday.  It is a good time to join in with other brothers and sisters in Christ in acts of humility, confession and soul searching.

Ash Wednesday is a great time to come to grips with our own impending death.

Why I Finally Joined a Small Group

small group

Since Suzie and I have become a part of First Baptist Church, we have gotten involved in a small group of believers from our church.  I have resisted doing this for some time and am so glad that we are doing this.

Reasons I formerly avoided small groups

1.  Work schedule – I have been in the hospitality industry and my wife has worked in retail.  Our schedules did not make it easy to be a part of a regularly scheduled weekly meeting.

2.  Fear of accountability – my life has been up and down.  The last thing I wanted was to be accountable to other Christians.

3.  Laziness – it is easier to stay home with my wife than get ready to spend time with others.

Reasons I eagerly attend small group now

Prayer, then, is the uplifting of the heart…We pray, therefore when the heart draws near to God, when it speaks with Him, when in sincere faith it seeks help of Him alone.
