The NFL is finished with the fifth week of the season. Using my QB ranking formula, the following are my top 10 rated QBs in the NFL.
This week we have a new leader. Last week’s leader was bypassed while on a bye week. Some other players climbed or fell this week. Three players fell out of the top 10 rankings. Matt Schaub of Houston fell from 7th last week all the way out of the top 10. Shaun Hill, San Francisco and Jay Cutler, Chicago also fell from the list. This all means that 3 new players entered the rankings.
1. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts
Peyton Manning was the FedEx Air quarterback of the week. He led the Colts to a win over the Titans and has looked flawless this year. Manning is putting himself into the discussions of the best of all time.
2. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Brees has been atop the rankings since week 1. It took a bye week and another strong outing from Peyton Manning to drop him to second.
3. Brett Favre, Minnesota Vikings
I almost typed Green Bay instead of Minnesota. Old habits are hard to break. It is still strange seeing Favre in purple instead of green. Whatever color, he is playing within himself and has lead the Vikings to a 5-0 start. It is easier to play within himself when #28, Adrian Peterson is standing behind him.
4. Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos
I think it is safe to say that Orton has won over the Bronco fans. Defeating the Patriots in front of the home crowd to move the Broncos to 5-0 will tend to do that. Orton was 6th last week.
5. Eli Manning, New York Giants
Almost a bye week for Eli. Playing just a portion of the game against the high school-like Oakland Raiders, Eli did all he needed to do to remain 5th.
6. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Flacco’s team has lost 2 tough games in the past 2 weeks. This is the big cause in his fall from 4th last week to 6th.
7. Matt Hasselback, Seattle Seahawks
Hasselback returned from injury with a strong outing. He made the highest leap this week from unranked to 7th.
8. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
Ryan climbed one spot from 9th to 8th this week with 329 yards and 2 TDs against San Francisco. He emerged while his SF counterpart fell out of the rankings.
9. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys
Romo had impressive numbers that jumped him into the rankings this week. When you have 1 receiver (Miles Austin) catch passes for 250 yards, that will do it. Romo must provide better leadership if he wants to remain in the rankings.
10. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers
Big Ben edged out Jay Cutler of Chicago for the tenth spot. Does a 7 point win over the Lions without Matthew Stafford bode well for his future rankings?
