The primary statistic for an NFL football team is their wins-losses numbers. This is what determines success or failure. It is also what determines whether a team will make the playoffs and compete for a Super Bowl.
There is another statistic that helps us see how teams stack up with the rest of the league. It is the point differential stat. This is determined by subtracting points allowed from points scored. 4 teams in the NFL have a differential over 100 points. 2 in the AFC and 2 in the NFC. These 4 teams would have to be considered the cream of the crop that should compete for the Super Bowl.
5 teams have a negative differential over 100 points. These teams will compete for the #1 draft pick after the season is over. They are teams in disarray.
The Best Point Differentials (over 100 points)
- New Orleans Saints (186)
- Minnesota Vikings (139)
- Indianapolis Colts (120)
- New England Patriots (105)
The Worst Point Differentials (Under 100 points)
- St. Louis Rams (-167)
- Cleveland Browns (-157)
- Oakland Raiders (-143)
- Detroit Lions (-142)
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-133)
Some interesting notes about these numbers:
- New England has 4 of the 5 total losses of the top 4 teams.
- Some how Oakland has managed 3 wins. When they get beat, they really get beat.
- Arizona has the lowest differential for a division leader (50).
- Washington only has a -35 point differential with a 3-8 record.
