21 Oklahoma Players on Preseason Watch Lists

Various organizations pass out trophies at the end of the college football season.  Most of these organizations create a watch list at the beginning of the season to monitor the likely suspects.  The following are the lists that contain members of the Oklahoma Sooners’ football team.

In total, there are 12 awards listed here with 21 nominees for the Sooners.

Heisman Trophy

The Heisman does not have an official watch list.  ESPN has a panel of voters that will list their top 10 candidates throughout the season.  It is no surprise that the list includes this OU player.

Bronko Nagurski Award

This award is for the Top Defensive Player.  It is presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.  Two Sooners made the list.

Maxwell Award

This award is awarded by the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia to the nations top player.  55 candidates are on the initial watch list.  Oklahoma has 4 of the 55.

Chuck Bednarik Award

The Maxwell Football Club also awards this award to the Top Defensive Player of the Year.  3 Sooners made the list.

Lou Groza Award

This award is presented to the outstanding kicker in the nation.  It is sponsored by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.  Oklahoma’s kicker made the watch list.

Outland Trophy

This award is presented to the outstanding lineman in college football.  This award is sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee.  It is the 3rd oldest award in college football.  Oklahoma has 2 players on the list.

Walter Camp Award

This award goes to the top player in college football.  It is the 4th oldest individual trophy in football. 30 players are put on the preseason watch list.

Davey O’Brien Award

This is for the top quarterback in college football.  Oklahoma’s nominee already has one of these trophies, having won the award last year.

Jim Thorpe Award

This is awarded to the top defensive back in the country.  31 players are listed on the preseason watch list.

Ted Hendricks Award

This award is for the top defensive end in the nation.  Both defensive ends for Oklahoma have made the watch list.  Only 15 players are on the list.

Two Oklahoma running backs are listed for this award which goes to the top running back in the nation.

Oklahoma’s tight end is on the list for the award for the best tight end in the nation.
