How Did My QB Draft Predictions Stack Up?

by Frank Gantz on April 24, 2010

Last week, I posted an article ranking the top 10 quarterbacks I thought would be drafted by the NFL.  I’m man enough to revisit my predictions and show you how I stacked up.  One thing I did learn – next year I will take the predictions of guys like Mel Kuiper with a grain of salt.  Those guys have jobs like weathermen.  Sound like you know what you are doing, and “Oh, well” if your predictions are off.

I’ll grade myself on the grading system used before the curve and all that jazz.  Here is what I predicted, and what actually happened.

#1 Prediction: Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

#1 Actual: Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

#2 Prediction: Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame

#2 Actual: Tim Tebow, Florida

#3 Prediction: Colt McCoy, Texas

#3 Actual: Jimmy Clausen, Notre Dame

#4 Prediction: Tim Tebow, Florida

#4 Actual: Colt McCoy, Texas

#5 Prediction: Tony Pike, Cincinnati

#5 Actual: Mike Kafka, Northwestern

#6 Prediction: Jarrett Brown, West Virginia

#6 Actual: John Skelton, Fordham (Armanti Edwards of Ap State doesn’t count – he’s a wide receiver)

#7 Prediction: Dan LaFevour, Central Michigan

#7 Actual: Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee

#8 Prediction: Jevan Snead, Ole Miss

#8 Actual: Rusty Smith, Florida Atlantic

#9 Prediction: John Skelton, Fordham

#9 Actual: Dan LaFevour, Central Michigan

#10 Prediction: Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee

#10 Actual: Tony Pike, Cincinnati (Joe Webb of UAB will also be a receiver.)

So my true score would 1 out of 10 (Sam Bradford) or 10% (Grade of F).

I did have 8 of the 10 picked in my top 10.  That would be 80% (Grade of B).

I was off by 25 positions.  That would be 75% (Grade of C).

So 165 total points divided by 3 = 55 (Overall Grade of F).

I picked Jarrett Brown (WVU) and Jevan Snead (Ole Miss) in my top 10.  Neither were drafted at all.  You were right Chris Rinehart.  He commented on my previous article that Snead wasn’t worthy of a pick.

I did not pick Mike Kafka (NW) or Rusty Smith (FAU).

I’ll see if I can do better next year.  I would say that I would move on to also do running backs, but I failed this test and get to repeat this grade.
