Book Review: Pujols by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth

During the past couple of weeks, I have met numerous fans of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.  These fans have arrived in Palm Beach county from the Midwest to watch their beloved Cardinals play during spring training.  As I have spoken to these fans, they are all a bit anxious about the future of Albert Pujols.

Pujols is in the final year of his contract with the Cardinals.  These fans do not want to see him playing for any other team.  They love seeing their favorite player wearing the red and white of St. Louis.

What makes a player this beloved by a team’s fans?

In the case of Albert Pujols, two qualities are repeatedly mentioned both by the fans and by Scott Lamb and Tim Ellsworth in this new biography, Pujols: More Than the Game.  First of all, he is a great baseball player.  Lamb and Ellsworth present statistical data that marks his greatness on the baseball diamond.  Secondly, Pujols is a man of strong Christian character.

The baseball fan will read this book and feel like they are sitting in the stadium watching Pujols’ exploits.  Others will read this book and be inspired by the quality of life demonstrated by Pujols and his wife.  The couple have strongly invested their money and their time into the lives of special needs children both in the Midwest and in his native The Dominican Republic.  Whether on the field or in their charitable works, the Pujols’ couple lives to bring glory to God.

Lamb and Ellsworth are obviously huge fans of Pujols.  They write as baseball fans and as fellow Christians.  If you are a baseball fan, you will want to add this book to your reading list.  Even if you are not a fan, you will be inspired and challenged by what you read.
