491 Years Ago Today: Martin Luther Took His Stand

Martin Luther at Worms - April 18, 1521

Unless I am convicted by scripture and plain reason–I do not accept the authority of popes and councils for they have contradicted each other–my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise, God help me. Amen.

On April 18, 1521, Martin Luther was urged to recant his writings which gave birth to the Protestant Reformation. The above quote was his response.

We would do well to make these words our own whenever we are urged (from external or internal sources) to accept any authority over the Word of God. Let God’s word captivate your conscience.
