One Bible Verse

September 27, 2012

I was watching a 2006 broadcast of Renewing Your Mind with R.C. Sproul. During the course of his lecture, Sproul answered a few hypothetical questions.

Question #1:  If you were in prison or on a deserted island and could have only one book of the Bible, what would it be?

Answer #1:  Hebrews

Question #2: With the same scenario, if you could have only one verse of the Bible, what would it be?

Answer #2:  Genesis 15:17

When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.
(Genesis 15:17 ESV)

This passage relates to God establishing his covenant with Abraham. I’m pretty sure that I would never have guessed this verse, but it is a power-packed verse.

If I had to answer question #2, I would go with this verse:

Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
(Hebrews 12:2 ESV)

What one verse would you choose? Tell us in the comments below.

  1. The verse I “go to” in times of stress, fear, uncertainity, or happiness and joy, is
Psalms 46: 10–”Be still and know that I am God!”. No matter what is happening in my world that truth remains true.
