Such were some of you.
It is easy for Christians to develop a smug feeling of superiority towards those who live ungodly lives. Easy, but oh, so wrong. It is easy because we know that ungodliness leads away from God and will be judged by God.
But this easy thing must be avoided. Why? Because whatever heinous sins you can name amongst the ungodly, such were some of you.
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
(1 Corinthians 6:9-11 ESV)
Notice the list of those who will not inherit the kingdom of God:
1. The Sexually Immoral
4. Practicing Homosexuals
6. The Greedy
If you are honest, you will surely identify (hopefully in the past) with at least one of these on the list. Do you also know that when you attend church, there are those sitting around you were on this list?
The biblical teaching around these verses is that the church cannot take lightly when those who identify with Christ continue in these sins. At the same time, we should not be shocked when those in the world live this way.
Unless the work of the Lord Jesus has brought change into our lives, we would continue walking in this darkness. When we truly understand that the work of Christ is the only thing separating our behavior from that of those who continue in these sins, we will boast only of Christ and lovingly share the gospel.
