How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
(Psalm 119:103 ESV)
On more than one occasion in the Bible, a connection is made between eating food and ingesting the word of God. Physical eating serves as an illustration of how we should get God’s word into our souls.
In the case of this verse, the psalmist delights in the sweet taste of God’s word. For him it is sweeter than honey to his mouth.
Now who doesn’t like the sweetness of honey? A simple drop of this bee produced nectar causes a man to utter groans of delight. Perhaps you saw the episode of Duck Dynasty in which the bearded men diligently sought a way to harvest honey from a huge hive in the bayou. They tried all kinds of schemes until the elder wise man of the group successfully recouped the sweet bounty.
Such should be our desire to have an even sweeter, soul-satisfying taste. A taste which nourishes more than the physical body. Have you acquired a taste for the sweetness of God’s word?
