The wildly popular Bible app, YouVersion, has released data on what Bible verses have been the most popular in 2014. Popularity was determined by some algorithm factoring bookmarks, highlights and shares. Check the link for a few infographics of their results – Our Year With The Bible Infographic 2014 | YouVersion.
These are the worldwide top ten verses (shown in ESV). After the list, I offer a few observations.
1. Romans 12:1-2
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
2. Philippians 4:8
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
3. Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
4. Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
5. Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
6. Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
7. Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
8. Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
9. Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
10. Proverbs 3:6
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
The top verse for the USA was Philippians 4:8. The USA was joined in this by Brazil and Nigeria. Had I guessed before seeing the list, I would have guessed that the USA would have been a verse from Philippians 4, but I would have guessed verse 13 in the chapter.
It is nice to see some of the connecting verses making the list. That supplies a bit more context which avoids overly proof-texting verses. Connections applied to Philippians 4, Matthew 6 and Proverbs 3.
Most interesting to me is that Jeremiah 29:11 was the most popular in the UK, Canada, South Africa and Australia. All of those countries have a history in the old British Empire. I have no idea what that tidbit means, but it is interesting.
