I never had the privilege of hearing Vance Havner preach when he was living. I have heard countless stories from those who have heard him. He coupled the preaching of biblical truth with a unique wit. This combination made it difficult for his hearers to forget the truth he had taught.
Yesterday I was listening to part of a sermon from years ago (he passed in 1986) while driving north on I-95. His subject matter was from the popular verse in Romans:
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for the good…
Havner was making a distinction between “knowing” this truth about God’s workings in our lives and “understanding” why and how God was working. We can know because God’s word tells us so. We may not understand the why’s and how’s. Here is how Havner brought this down to earth:
I don’t understand how a black cow can eat green grass and produce white milk. But I know that I like ice cream.
