The above image is on the Google homepage today. It is to commemorate the 161st anniversary of the publishing of Moby Dick. Moby Dick may very well be the great American novel.

I first learned to appreciate this work in Dr. Dale Soden’s class on the history of American intellectualism. It has been a friend since those early days at Oklahoma Baptist University.

Melville brilliantly weaves great themes into the tale of the bitter Captain Ahab pursuing the great white whale. You will be led to think about good vs. evil, the existence of God, the nature of evil, the role of religion in the lives of people among many other themes.

You will get an up-close look into early New England life especially in a coastal town. The section where the preacher mounts a formidable pulpit to preach from the book of Jonah will give you much to chew over.

My favorite quote from the book certainly can be applied to issues faced by today’s Christian.

Better to sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.

Do you have any favorite lines or sections from the book?
