A few years ago, I was pleased that Oprah would elevate reading in our country when she started her book club. I loved the selections of literary classics. I loved the exposure to newer works of literature.
However, Oprah seems to be promoting books which promote a mysticism that is alien to orthodox Christianity.
On Oprah’s book club website, she mentions The Bible as one of her favorite books. However, she also mentions “Discover the Power Within You” by Eric Butterworth. Oprah notes,
“This book changed my perspective on life and religion. Eric Butterworth teaches that God isn’t “up there.” He exists inside each one of us, and it’s up to us to seek the divine within.
Now in her newest book club choice, she is promoting the work of Eckhart Tolle. One of his previous books is on her favorite book list. According to the author’s website, his true purpose is “the union with the divine.”
On a book site that I use, one reader commented after reading this book, “had my first experiences with detaching myself from the mind after reading this…..WOW!!!”
It appears that Oprah has more than being a celebrity in common with some of her favorite guests. Tom Cruise and John Travolta have been two of her most popular guests on her TV show. Both are members of the Church of Scientology. Their views would be in a similar vein to the teachings of Eckhart Tolle.
