On Tuesday President Obama hosted a dinner for leaders of American Muslims to celebrate the beginning of Ramadan – the holy month for Islam. That does not trouble me so much as what he said. The President quoted Muhammed Ali’s explanation of religion:
Rivers, ponds, lakes and streams – they all have different names, but they all contain water. Just as religions do – they all contain truths.
This is a false analogy. It may be true that all types of bodies of water contain water. This does not mean that all religions contain truth. Even if you acknowledge that all religions contain truth (and you could make that claim), not all religions are true.
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
— Jesus quoted in John 14:6
Containing truth and being truth are two separate matters. President Obama has given in to universalism. That is the view that all roads lead to God. False religions do not normally dispel all notions of truth. That would be too easy to detect. Satan has cleverly wrapped false religion with elements of truth.
Some will object that this is too narrow. Read again the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount:
Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
— Matthew 7:13-14
The narrow way that leads to God is through Jesus. No other path nor body of water will get you there.
